For Israel Enough is not Sufficient

On the Jewish festival of Passover, we sing the song “Dayenu”, which means “Enough”.  The song expresses our thanks for each stage of the Exodus from Egypt and we highlight that each event on the journey would have itself been sufficient.  Medical achievements of the modern State of Israel, however, clearly shows that today’s Israelis are not content with doing merely “enough” as these examples from the last 3 months illustrate.

In the medical arena, Israeli scientists have broken all bounds in their search for cures for deadly diseases.  Not only have three Israeli research teams discovered what keeps cancer cells growing, but they have just found a chemical that causes them to self-destruct.  Another cancer treatment from Israel’s VBL Therapeutics in Phase 3 testing prevents solid tumors from obtaining sufficient blood supply – causing them to die.

Just in case any of these amazing discoveries don’t succeed, scientists at Israel’s Weizmann Institute have used a twin-attack using inhibiting molecules EGFR and PYK2 against previously incurable triple-negative breast cancer, to significantly reduce the size of tumors.  Meanwhile, the amazing MRI-focused ultrasound treatment from Israel’s Insightec that has been curing tremors and removing uterine fibroids has now been given the CE mark to go beyond its current boundaries and additionally treat prostate cancer non-invasively. And Technion’s Israeli-Arab Professor Hossam Haick is taking his Na-Nose breath test further by using it to detect cancer even in apparently “healthy” people.

Cancer treatment in Israeli hospitals is not limited just to Israeli citizens.  At Sheba hospital in Tel Hashomer,
40% of Dr. Yoram Neumann’s oncology patients are Palestinian-Arab children from the Territories and Gaza.  Indeed, Palestinian Arab children occupy 50% of the unit’s beds.  Meanwhile, Israeli and Palestinian Arab researchers have been working together to discover risk factors for B Cell Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma in both communities.

It seems so appropriate that the Israeli biotech Biondvax has developed the Universal Flu Vaccine M-001.  Israeli scientists felt that it was not sufficient to target individual strains of influenza, but to look for a comprehensive solution. A 20% subsidy from the Israeli Government, plus a $2.8 million private investment should hopefully be sufficient for Biondvax to build a factory producing tens of millions of doses of M-001 annually, including for Phase 3 trials.

Here are some more, recent Israeli medical innovations that are “over and above” what most would consider normal thinking. First, instead of treating resistant MRSA infections with limited antibiotics, researchers at Israel’s Technion Institute have neutralized the deadly bacteria by attacking the unique amyloid fibrils it uses to attack the immune system. Next, patients will soon no longer suffer damage to brain tissue and spinal cord during neurosurgery thanks to the ArtiFascia biodegradable nanofiber protective patch developed by Israeli biotech Nurami Medical. Nurami, by the way, was founded by Israeli Jewish and Arab graduates.
Then, when sufferers of blood loss trauma were found to be dying of hypothermia, Israeli startup QinFlow’s developed its Warrior portable system which warms the bloods and fluids used in transfusions faster than any alternative system.

Who but Israelis would have gone this far?  One of Insightec’s tremor patients was petrified of being enclosed in the MRI treatment machine, so staff at Haifa’s Rambam Medical Center first gave him hypnosis therapy, and now he’s cured of the tremor and the psychosis!  Or how about the PMD200 device, developed by Israel’s Medasense Biometrics and recently granted European approval, that can monitor pain in unconscious patients so that surgeons can still effectively assess and manage their pain?  And the HyperQ device from Israel’s Biological Signal Processing (BSP) that discovers heart problems that normal ECG tests cannot. Even anti-Israel Venezuela has purchased them!

I have sufficient space only to mention Israeli startup TPCera which uses the excretion from parasitic worms to treat auto-immune diseases.  Or the smart human airbags developed by Israel’s Hip-Hope to protect the elderly from life-threatening falls.  And only an Israeli company such as Medaware would have had the “chutzpa” to develop a system to tell doctors that they had written out a prescription that could endanger their patient’s life.

Israeli doctors recently saved an Arab baby born with her intestines outside her abdomen.  After birth, surgeons at Jerusalem’s Hadassah hospital put her organs back in place and closed the wound with the Israeli TopClosure Tension Relief System.

Finally, Israeli surgeons at Jerusalem’s Hadassah hospital, can now detect and correct abnormalities in the fetus from eight weeks after conception.  Irregular heartbeats, anemia, twins sharing placentas, congenital hernias, repairing spinal cord. Israeli doctors are saving life before it has even begun!

Israel - always trying to do more.

Israel begins a New Year

The Jewish New Year is a time of exciting new beginnings, and there is no better place to observe them than in the Jewish State itself.

Israeli medical discoveries and advances are announced every week, but the impact of the most recent innovations is simply staggering.  Technion scientists are the first in the world to manufacture cancer-killing chemicals inside the tumor itself.  These directly target the tumor, fooling the cancer’s defense mechanisms and avoiding the usual harsh side effects of chemotherapy.  Over at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Yotam Bar-On has developed new antibodies to attack the flu virus.  These antibodies disrupt virus’s ability to evade the immune system’s natural killer cells.

At Jerusalem’s Shaare Zedek Medical Center, a cutting-edge brain catheterization procedure was broadcast live to thousands of doctors attending the world’s largest cardiovascular conference in Washington DC.  And at the same hospital, doctors have begun using a robot to unblock arteries remotely.  The robot is more accurate than human hands and avoids any radiation risk to surgeons.  The robot is manufactured by Corindus – founded by two Israeli scientists.

Further new Israeli treatments include the bladder cancer product BC-819, developed by Israel’s Biocancell Therapeutics, which has just completed a successful clinical trial.  Meanwhile, in Hong Kong, sufferers of severe Glaucoma will now be able to receive treatment using the innovative CO2 laser IOPtiMate manufactured by Israel’s XLVision Sciences.  Finally, scientists at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem have developed a new cocktail of genes that are extremely effective in turning adult cells back into stem cells. These stem cells, when transplanted, can renew previously damaged tissue or organs.

The New Year will see the culmination of hundreds of new Israeli technological ventures.  Israel will build its first bio-waste power plant at Neot Hovav in the Negev that will generate 5 megawatts of clean energy and process over one hundred thousand tons of organic waste per year.  A new National Photonics and Electro-Optics Research Center will allow professionals and students to delve into the exciting new science of light and optics.

The Israeli government will establish a new hi-tech authority - the National Technical Innovation Authority - to enhance Israeli innovation and bolster economic growth. And Israel’s Algatechnologies is to build a new factory at Kibbutz Ketura that will grow new forms of beneficial micro-algae for use in foods, medicines and cosmetics.

The New Year promises to enhance relationships between the Jewish State and other forward-thinking countries.  “The sky’s the limit” when it comes to new ties between Israel and India, as Israel’s Prime Minister stated at his meeting with his Indian counterpart, Narendra Modi in New York.  Israel’s Economic Office in Delhi has already been busy matchmaking Israeli and Indian companies.  Even a well-established relationship was strengthened when the US Senate unanimously adopted the United States-Israel Strategic Partnership Act that will lay the foundation for expanded US-Israel cooperation in defense, energy, agriculture, and other key sectors.

We can only wish that future Israeli-Arab relations mirrored the words of exiled Syrian opposition leader Dr. Kamal Al-Labwani, who visited wounded Syrians being treated at Israel’s Ziv Hospital. "This moving humanitarian gesture is an opening for rapprochement between the two peoples and hope for peace on quieter days," he said.  And if other Arab leaders visited Israeli hospitals, such as Haifa’s Rambam Medical Center, they would see young Israeli patients start the school year.  Jews, Moslems, Christians, Druze, plus Arabs from Gaza - all study together in their year groups.  And whilst we are dreaming of new beginnings, listen to the “Dream it. Do it” New Year message from the students of Israel’s Technion – in 14 languages.

Finally, there is no better way to start a new year than by starting a new life.  24,800 new immigrants to Israel did precisely that in the last 12 months - a 28% increase on the previous year and the highest number in the past five years.  For the first time in history, more immigrants arrived from France (nearly 6,000) than from any other country, and many more are expected in 5775.  An even larger number of new arrivals had far less distance to travel. A record 176,230 Israeli babies were born in 5774 - the next generation of new beginnings.

Happy New Year.

Israel is Their Only Hope

When I see news of Syrian civilians being barrel-bombed by their government and others needlessly starving to death, it is clear that only Israel can pull this crazy world out of its spiraling descent into self-destruction.

In the last few weeks, floods of wounded Syrians have been seeking and receiving treatment in Israeli hospitals.  A Christian group even rushed a Muslim Syrian Kurdish child from Iran-dominated Iraq to Israel, to repair the hole in her heart. At the IDF field hospital on the Syrian border, soldiers apply a core Jewish value: “Whoever saves one life, saves the entire world”. We then witnessed the surreal spectacle of Arabs on Al-Jazeera TV questioning as to why the Syrian army, Hezbollah and other Islamic military groups cannot be more humane like the Israeli army.

Every week the Jewish State gives hope to the sick and disadvantaged around the world.  Just look at some of the latest medical discoveries and innovations from Israeli universities and bio-techs.

Researchers at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem have just discovered a cure for abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) - the 13th biggest killer in the Western world.  They have patented low-level laser treatment to reduce inflammation and promote wound healing that will transform the lives of the 200,000 new patients diagnosed with AAA in the US each year.  Still with the Hebrew U, researchers there have developed a peptide to counteract enzymes in high blood sugar that cause brain cell death - the reason why diabetics have a much higher risk of Alzheimer’s and dementia.  And doctors throughout Africa are anxiously waiting for HUJ researchers to announce their solution to the malaria parasite.  The deadly disease is responsible for more than one million deaths each year.

Scientists at Israel’s Weizmann Institute have found a pathway to a cure for the two currently untreatable forms of Gaucher’s disease.   Scientists at Tel Aviv University have developed a computer algorithm that identifies genes involved in the aging process.  The findings provide hope of developing medication to transform old diseased cells back into healthy ones.

Israel’s bio-techs have recently delivered hopeful news for many desperate patients.  Novocure’s clinical study of its NovoTTF therapy for pancreatic cancer demonstrated a significant decrease in cell count and reduced tumor volume. BiondVax announced that tests prove its universal flu vaccine matches all six pandemic flu strains in the world today, including bird flu strains H5N1 and H7N9 that have spread to humans and killed hundreds of people.  Oramed’s Phase 2a clinical trial of its ORMD-0801 oral insulin capsule for the treatment of type 2 diabetes met all primary and secondary endpoints. And MS patients can now stop four of their seven daily injections of Copaxone now that the US FDA has approved Teva’s more effective 40-ml dose.

The flood of illegal African migrants has put a huge strain on the Jewish State, but for some of those fleeing civil war, Israel appears to have been their only hope.  I certainly admire Israel’s volunteer doctors who treat them at Tel Aviv Central Bus station’s clinic.

The world’s increasing numbers of hungry families depend on Israeli agricultural innovations.  The latest includes a low-cost system from Israel’s Energy Industry Ltd. to grow vegetables in extreme cold.  It injects hot water into fine tubes to distribute heat over wide surfaces for large greenhouses and has been sold to the government of Georgia where temperatures drop to minus 30 degrees Celsius.  Meanwhile, Israel’s Haifa Group has just launched a free mobile app (iOS or Android) that helps farmers determine the precise amount of fertilizer and nutrients needed for each type of crop.  And at the end of next year, Israel will see the launch of the Venus Vegetation and Environment Monitoring Micro-satellite that is our key hope for preventing catastrophic deterioration in the state of the planet.  Israel Aerospace Industries is building the hull of the satellite and Israel’s Elbit is building the camera.

Israel is uniquely securing world cities from terrorism.  The new security system from Israel’s Magal, for example, protects Mombassa - Kenya’s seaport.  Meanwhile Russian police worried about the Sochi Winter Olympics are traveling to Israel for counter-terrorism training in order to respond to Islamists who have been murdering civilians in Russia’s North Caucasus regions.  And at Israel’s first-ever cyber-technology show, Cybertech 2014, Prime Minister Netanyahu hailed Israel’s 200 computer security companies as making the Jewish State one of the few players that can save the Internet from hackers.  In addition, the new facilities built by Lockheed Martin, EMC and IBM will turn Beersheva into a world-class cyber-security center.

I conclude, as I began, with a plea that this message is brought home to our neighbors in the Middle East and to the rest of the world.  Embrace the Start-up Nation, as have the many Palestinian Arabs hoping to better themselves.  Such as those at SodaStream who have made vociferous appeals “not to boycott us”.  Or the hundreds of Arab students studying at Ariel University in Samaria, as observed by the Czech Ambassador to Israel on his recent visit there.

As Israel’s Prime Minister said at the World Economic Forum’s annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland, “We have no choice – to survive we had to innovate.”

We now all need Israeli innovations to survive.
