What Boycott?

One of my readers suggested that I write another anti-boycott article, to follow up this, this, this, this and this.  So I just took excerpts from Israel’s positive news over the last 3 weeks and will let you make up your minds as to whether or not there is a boycott.

The European center of the BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) movement is in the British Isles (Ireland and the UK).  But you wouldn’t be able to infer that from the close relationship that Dublin’s Trinity College has with Israel’s Weizmann and Technion Institutes.  Their joint research into treatments for cancer and inflammatory diseases is phenomenal.  And as British Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills Sajid Javid said, during the annual British Israel Business Awards event, “The past few years have been a golden era for Anglo-Israeli business”.  Mr Javid, a “proud British-born Muslim”, told the audience “I share Israel’s love for freedom and democracy.”  So it is no wonder that British Airways is upgrading its service between London Heathrow and Tel Aviv Ben Gurion by operating its new wide-body Boeing 787 “Dreamliner”.

There is definitely no boycott in the field of Medicine. For example, the Joint Accreditation Committee of the International Society for Cellular Therapy & European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (JACIE) has recognized the Bone Marrow Transplantation departments of Israel’s Hadassah and Schneider medical centers.  It will increase opportunities for international research.  However, don’t listen to the BBC if you want to know what’s really going on in the world.  The biased corporation gave fanfare to a Belgium ovary transplant story, but made no mention of a similar Israeli one two weeks earlier.  And the BBC totally ignored the vital teamwork of Professor Jacob Schachter from Israel’s Sheba Medical Center when reporting the melanoma treatment breakthrough at UK’s Royal Marsden hospital.

Staying in the medical arena, Canada is definitely one of Israel’s best friends.  Scientists at Israel’s Bar Ilan University have been working with Canada’s McGill University and have made a breakthrough in the treatment of addiction.  By administering a DNA methylation inhibitor, they have removed the cravings that occur during an addict’s withdrawal process.  Meanwhile, Canada’s Azrieli Foundation has donated $10 million to the Hebrew University of Jerusalem for researching genetic disorders.  But Israeli-Canadian cooperation went literally “out of this world” when the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) and the Israel Space Agency (ISA) agreed to develop advanced applications in satellite communications. Two research projects have already been initiated.

Israel and the USA have always enjoyed an excellent valued relationship, as former Arkansas Governor and US Presidential candidate Mike Huckabee wrote recently.  This year, 65 students from Israel and the US will become Fulbright Scholars and will study in each other’s country.  And we were privileged to see at least 100,000 people line up on both sides of Manhattan’s Fifth Avenue to watch another 40,000 march in support of Israel at the Israel Day Parade in New York City.

Other recent Israeli Government international activities include:
-          Signing an Authorized Economic Operator (AEO) Agreement with China.
-          Launching a joint irrigation project in Kazakhstan.

New international activities involving Israeli companies include:
-          Bram Plastics, Caesarstone and Avgol building or expanding operations in the USA.
-          Integrity’s banking consultancy support for Belarus.
-          Algatechnologies distributing its AstaPure astaxanthin antioxidant ingredients to Japan.

Despite the anti-Israel rhetoric from South Africa, when it comes to building there the largest radio telescope in the world, it is noticeable that Israel’s Mellanox will supply the telescope’s multicast network.  Similarly, all the pressure on Israel to reveal its nuclear secrets hasn’t prevented the International Atomic Energy Agency from ordering 400 million nuclear-sterilized flies from Israel’s BioBee. These flies repel the Mediterranean fruit fly, a pest that has been wreaking havoc on citrus trees in the Balkans.  (The IAEA wants to promote peaceful uses of nuclear technology.)  Another fair-weather friend, the EU, is eagerly looking forward to purchasing supplies of Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) sourced from the new Israeli natural gas fields.  Finally, practically every country on the planet wants advice and technology from Israel that will help make best use of limited water supplies.

So despite BDS plots to hurt it financially, Israel, as confirmed by Moody’s chief economist Dr Mark Zandi, has one of the world’s best economies.  Its fiscal situation is better than ever, the debt-to-GDP ratio is low and continues to fall, its economy has been growing for 15 straight years, and there's almost no unemployment.  The future also looks rosy, as investment in Israeli startups continues to increase.

Some 280 global high-tech giants have now established R&D centers in Israel.  These include IBM, where Israeli scientists have turned IBM’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) system (known as “Watson”) from quiz-show expert (in 2011) and master chef (in 2014) into a medical advisor (today).  High-tech giants now include Visa Europe, which has just opened a start-up center in Tel Aviv.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gQWqSgI76FI

Exports of Israeli cyber security products doubled in 2014 to $6 billion.  The free world is reliant on Israel’s expertise in cyber security.  Following a cyber attack on Germany’s Bundestag, Europe’s largest private organization for applied scientific research in Europe, the Fraunhofer Institute for Secure Information Security, has decided to establish a cyber-security innovation center in Israel.

So as the Jewish State looks forward following the celebrations of its first “Unity Day” I’ll play out with the messages of support from mega bands One Republic and Bon Jovi that have totally ignored calls from the pathetic BDS thugs.  But special mention must be given of Art Garfunkel, who enhanced the lyrics of “Bridge over Troubled Water” with “I’m on your side, Tel Aviv”.

Finally, a Chabad poster that had been attached to balloons, drifted from Israel into Lebanon.  The terrorist group Hezbollah probably didn’t realize their implied message of support to the Jewish State when two of their members lifted up the banner and displayed “We Want Moshiach Now” to the world.  Perhaps they thought that they had picked up an Israeli secret weapon?  Perhaps they were right!

BDS Means Boycott Everything

There is some really bad news for the lunatic anti-Israel BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) brigade.  Virtually every electronic device in the world is now produced using Israeli technology.  The systems manufactured by Yavne-based Orbotech are used globally to produce almost every printed circuit board on the planet.  So when you tell the BDS crazies to dispose of all their electronic equipment, here are some recent news reports relating to other everyday items that they also need to steer well clear of.

1. Doctors and medicine

BDS advocates must never approach hospitals or GP surgeries because Israeli discoveries, treatments and life-saving devices dominate the medical arena.  Latest advances include treatments for pancreatic cancer and bladder cancer; a vaccine against avian flu; improved methods for diagnosing ADHD and blood clots; a new durable material for hip replacements; an app for diabetics; a watch that prevents heart attacks and safer cancer radiation therapy.

2. Water, food and drink

There is seldom a day without an announcement from one of Israel’s prolific water treatment companies.  It may be Miya, saving billions of gallons of water in the Americas, South East Asia, South Africa and Australia; or RWL water, supplying water treatment systems to America’s nuclear energy industry.  And the BDS mob will soon need to avoid most well-known food and drink products as the top companies in the US food and beverage industry are adopting Israeli water solutions in their manufacturing processes.

3. Agricultural produce

Israeli companies, products and innovative methods have revolutionized the agricultural industry in many countries.  Israel has established twenty “centers of excellence” in India, providing technological solutions to agricultural issues.  Netafim started propagating Israeli technology in 1965 with its drip irrigation system - now popular even in Arab countries.  Netafim has just completed a successful international pilot project of its uManage platform, which helps farmers to monitor irrigation/fertilizer performance and yields.  Meanwhile, even apparently small-scale Israeli innovations can help feed billions of needy people.  Israelis Moti Cohen and Mendi Pollak won the $20,000 top prize in the Pears Challenge. Their Livingbox “mini-farm” can grow vegetables anywhere, with a self-sustaining “closed loop” of energy and nutrition.

4. Being photographed

Israeli cameras have acquired such a high reputation that members of the BDS cult will almost certainly find that their images have been taken by Israeli-produced equipment and recorded on Israeli-developed storage.  There is nowhere for them to hide - NASA has even adopted Israeli cameras from Israel’s Medigus to conduct inspections in space.  And if they try to find a shady place to conceal themselves, it may have been constructed from one of the Israeli designs entered in the international urban shade competition at the Holon Design Museum.

5.  Human contact

BDS-ers should avoid contact with products and services from almost every country in the world (even Arab ones) because of their ties with Israel; but here are a few recent highlights.

China: - A delegation headed by Ren Zhiwu - deputy director-general of China’s High-Tech Industry Department of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) - arrived in Israel, the first time the high-level government team has come to Israel.

India: - In the biggest pro-Israel, anti-terrorist rally in recent years, an estimated 20,000 gathered in Kolkata, India in a show of solidarity with Israel.

Vietnam: - Trade between Vietnam and Israel increased by 53 per cent year-on-year to $426 million during the first half of 2014.

And if in the not too distant future you should happen to spot any stupid BDS-ers trying to relax and enjoy the lavish gardens and waterfalls at the bio-dome being built at Singapore’s Changi Airport, please whisper in their ears, “Nice isn’t it?  “Designed by an Israeli!”

6. Colored fabric

The final red light for the “dyed-in-the-wool” BDS thugs is that Israel’s Kornit Digital Printing has developed water-based inks that are entirely organic, 100% non-toxic, vegan-friendly and compatible with all types of fabric.  Kornit’s high-speed DTG printers are “revolutionizing” the fashion industry with single step fabric printing and no additional finishing.

So you will be able to distinguish BDS “clowns” very easily.  They will be the sickly, parched, thin, sad and lonely ones, wearing bland clothing.

Losers!

Where was the Apartheid State in 2013?

“And if you think that's Apartheid it's because… You don't know what Apartheid really was”.  (From “Israel Apartheid” by Ari Lesser)

My journey through the news reports of 2013 has now reached the subject of Israel’s treatment of its largest minorities - specifically, Moslem Arabs (including Bedouins), Christians and Druze.  (Those who missed last week’s “The Israeli Occupation in 2013” can still read it here.)

As usual, the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) idiots have got it totally wrong when they accuse Israel of being an “apartheid” state.  There is no segregation of Israel’s Jews, Arabs and Druze in the manner of South Africa under apartheid. The following news stories from 2013 show that Israel gives its minorities equal status in all areas of society.

When reporting medical stories involving Israeli-Arabs I frequently feature Haifa’s Rambam Medical Center.  A high proportion of Muslim women refuse to undergo prenatal testing for deformities, so Rambam surgeons often have to perform operations such as on two 14 year-old twins each with a cleft palate and nose, and fused fingers. Also at Rambam in June, Israeli-Arab Mohammed Eckert received a kidney from the son of Israeli-Jew David Ben-Yair whilst simultaneously David received a kidney from Mohammed’s wife.  "We bonded both physically and mentally," said David. "Here, in our country, and in the world at large, we have to realize that we have the power to save people, all people."

Congenital heart defects are also common among the Israeli-Arab population.  At 28, Balal Kalash from Kfar Qara had undergone several cardiac operations at Schneider Children's Medical Center until in June he became the hospital’s oldest pediatric heart transplant patient.  And only in Israel could researchers have uncovered an Arab genetic disease.  The rare bone marrow mutation “congenital neutrophil defect syndrome” affected five Arabs at Sheba Hospital and two Moroccan Arabs in Munich.  Israeli doctors are now working on a potential treatment.

There was no discrimination in April when Muslim cardiologist Dr. Aziz Darawshe was promoted to become director of the emergency department at Hadassah University Medical Center in Jerusalem, and chairman of the Israel Society for Urgent Medicine.  Dr Darawshe would therefore have been impressed in October by the way Doctors at Israel’s Hadera hospital carefully extracted a 3.5cm hatpin that was accidentally swallowed by a 16-year-old Israeli-Arab girl from Baka al-Gharbiya.

Israel’s universities are a shining example of Israel’s integration of its minorities.  Last year, the top student at Israel’s Technion was a Moslem Israeli woman.  Mais Ali-Saleh graduated first in her medical school class and is now an obstetrician-gynecologist at Carmel Medical Center in Haifa.

In February we heard about the commercial plans for the diagnostic breath test for cancer invented by Technion’s Israeli-Arab Professor Hossam Haick.  In April, the normally anti-Israel New York Times published a positive feature on the Technion, highlighting its 20% Arab student composition.  It is also well worth reading Vivian Hamui's account of life with fellow students who include Ethiopians, Russians, Chinese, Dutch, Venezuelans and (of course) Arabs.

Israel certainly doesn’t rest on its (Nobel) laurels.  In 2013:
-         The Hebrew University started a program for students from minority backgrounds
-         The Israeli Ministry of Education founded the "Peace University" in Nazareth
-         Israel’s Higher Education Council launched a new $82 million, six-year program for Arabs.
-         Channel 2 TV featured Ashraf Brik - Israel’s first Arab Chemistry Professor.

These are some of the Jewish State’s initiatives in 2013 to improve the economic prospects of Israeli minorities:
-         January’s R&D conference for the Arab community, sponsored by Israel’s Ministry of Science
-         February’s inauguration of the Bedouin eco-village of Hura
-         March’s export by Golan Druze of 18,000 tons of apples to Syria.
-         The annual free distribution of fir trees by the municipality to Christian residents of Jerusalem.
-         The new Nazareth industrial park promoting economic cooperation between all religious groups.

In entertainment, 19-year-old Israeli-Arab Lina Mahoul won the TV song contest “The Voice Israel” singing Leonard Cohen’s “Halleluyah”.  In sport, Israel’s European Under-21 Soccer Championship squad contained Jews, Arabs, Druze and Ethiopians, as you can see in this video

There may be a way to convince the BDS mob that Israel is not an Apartheid state, but they would have to read and listen to what ordinary Israeli Arabs said themselves in 2013.  People such as:

-         Abdol Abugosh - “I’m proud to be Arab and Israeli.”
-         Anett Haskia, whose goal is to replace deceitful Arab representatives in Israel’s parliament.
-         Some of the majority of Bedouin who supported Israel’s plans to improve life in the Negev.

Or the thousands of Israel’s minorities that in 2013 were proud to serve in the Israeli Defense Forces.
Such as:
-         Samir – a Muslim Arab who was born in Syria but now lives in Israel.
-         Sgt René Elhozayel - an Arab Bedouin medic with 5,600 relatives who nearly all join the IDF.
-         Master Sgt. Marzuk Suaed who actively goes round recruiting fellow Bedouins.
-         Bedouin Lieutenant Colonel Magdi Mazarib, who was featured in Al Arabiya.
-         New recruit Muhammad Atrash and his brother Milad who is training to be an officer.
-         Colonel Ghassan Alian, the first Druze to serve as the chief of the elite Golani Brigade.

-         And especially Bedouin Ahmed Inaim who enlisted despite losing one brother in service and another who was wounded in the raid in which terrorists captured Gilad Shalit.  Please watch his video here.

To conclude, here is the full video of Ari Lesser’s “Israel Apartheid” to enjoy.

Finally, here is an example of how crazy the BDS squad really is.  When Larry Rich, from Israel’s Emek Hospital, spoke in the Scottish Parliament about Israel’s equal treatment of its patients and medical staff, a BDS member launched into a long verbal attack on the Jewish State.  Just before he sat down, he had the gall to ask for Israel’s help in treating someone with a serious medical condition.

Apartheid State?  What on earth are they talking about!

Israelis Wanted

Every week that passes, Israel increases its reputation as a global provider of essential services.  While BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) crazies peddle only lies about the Jewish State, the Rest of the World enjoys the benefits of Israeli innovations and shows clearly that it wants more.

30,000 of Israel’s 3.5 million visitors in 2012 came solely to receive treatment in Israeli medical centers. In addition, Israeli hospitals opened their doors to a further 210,469 Palestinian Arabs.  Medical tourists seek Israel’s world-renowned expertise and value for money treatments in numerous areas, including curing brain diseases, laser surgery, heart bypasses and fertility treatment. One visitor was Dr. Jason Bodzin of West Bloomfield, who had stem cell treatment for ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease). Ironically, this is the same condition suffered by Professor Stephen Hawking, who fell into a BDS black hole rather than attend Israel’s Presidential Conference that focused on making a better tomorrow.

Israel’s medical innovations are highly sought internationally. Brazil’s government was “honored” that Israel’s Protalix Biotherapeutics will be supplying and producing its Uplyso Gaucher’s disease treatment to Brazilians. Over in the USA, many thousands of women will want to take advantage of the fact that medical insurance now covers IceSense3 from Israel’s IceCure Medical. The unique minimally invasive cryo-ablation (freezing) system removes breast fibroids and tumors.

We remain overseas where Israeli skills and hi-tech are much in demand.  India has requested help from Israel’s MASHAV agency for International Development Cooperation to set up 28 technology centers in 10 Indian states to diversify its fruit and vegetable crops and raise yields.  In Nigeria, Israel’s Solel Boneh has been contracted to re-build and widen an 84km section of the Ibadan-Lagos highway in southwest Nigeria. And children at the Agahozo-Shalom Youth Village near Kigali literally sang the praises of Jerusalem-based Energiya Global, which is building Rwanda’s first solar field.

Billions of mobile phone users may want to download the software developed by Israeli start-up VascoDe. In countries where smartphones don’t work, VascoDe upgrades simple 2G phones so that they can access email, Facebook, Twitter, Wikipedia etc over standard cellular networks.  The airways were also filled with airline executives heading to the Paris Air Show, eager to see Israel’s Elbit demonstrate how its Clear Vision system helps pilots to land planes in any weather conditions.

The world cannot get enough of Israeli start-ups and their skilled staff.  Following Waze’s billion-dollar takeover by Google, Fastcompany.com listed its “6 Israeli Startups To Watch”.  Wix, Wibbitz, Powermat, Bizzabo, Roomer and Parko can certainly expect much more interest in their products.  $10.95 million from the latest round of funding from the Binational Industrial Research and Development (BIRD) Foundation will encourage fourteen new joint US-Israeli ventures.  And you may want to watch this new video from Israel’s Technion Institute that highlights the possible rewards from this kind of funding.

Increasingly, multinationals are eager to invest their own money in order to attract Israeli skills.  Deutsche Telekom, for example is growing its own Israeli start-ups by establishing a new incubator. Cisco, on the other hand is recruiting up to 100 local staff directly for its new Israeli development center.  The technology giant already employs 2000 staff in Israel.

UEFA president Michel Platini was overjoyed with Israel’s recent successful sporting event - the U21 Euro soccer tournament. "The stadiums were wonderful and well-organized, the pitches excellent and the atmosphere in the stadiums was great with many families with young children attending.”  After the tournament, many visitors stayed on to enjoy Tel Aviv’s beach – included by National Geographic Traveler in its top ten choices for the best beaches in the world.

Israelis have also been recognized for their quality products.  Exports of Israeli foods and beverages to the United States reached a record $224 million in 2012 – an increase of 50% in five years.

So it is not surprising that many Israeli-Arabs relish the opportunity to support the Jewish State.  Despite constant incitement by Arab politicians, Israeli National service by Arabs increased by 76 percent last year.  As Arab Muslim graduate Boshra Khalaila states, “I am a liberal free woman, with all the rights that I could enjoy.  I compare myself to other women my age in Jordan, the Palestinian territories, Egypt, any Arab country.  They don’t have the rights that I have.”

Finally, you may recall that in 1998, Miss Israel - Linor Abargil from Netanya - became Miss World.  But not so many will know that seven weeks prior to winning the title Linor was brutally assaulted.  A new documentary film has just been produced telling Linor’s story.  Following the contest, she went around the world, speaking out about her ordeal, meeting with other women who had also been attacked, working with survivors and those who help survivors.

Whatever the circumstances, Israelis are not found wanting.

Boycott Israel? Good Grief

There has been much written recently about BDS (Boycott, Disinvestment and Sanctions) against Israel following Professor Stephen Hawkings’ decision to cancel his appearance at the Israeli Presidential Conference in June.  My response is to provide an update to members of the BDS club of my previous articles here and here on the stupidity and futility of boycotting the Jewish State.  For my sources to this latest blog, I am using only medical news articles since January 2013 – i.e. the last four and a half months.  The following is just a small selection – a more extensive list will be posted on my blogsite in the next week or so.

Dear BDS member.  By boycotting Israeli treatments and research you will cause the deaths of millions of children from Hepatitis B because they couldn’t have SciGen’s Sci-B-Vac only third-generation Hep B virus vaccine.  You would have to destroy the research by Hadassah Medical Organization that located the gene that causes recurrent life-threatening infections and bone marrow failure in children.  The babies born deformed and blind from ectodermal dysplasia cannot touch the gene therapy that Israel’s Technion has developed.  Children paralysed by the genetic brain disease Peripheral Neuropathy will just have to whistle for the medication developed by doctors at Hadassah Medical Center – except of course that they can’t whistle.

BDS members obviously have no wish to cure cancer.
-         You would boycott Hebrew University Professor Alexander Levitzki’s award-winning cancer therapies.
-         You would dispatch Technion’s diagnosis breath test for lung cancer and stomach cancer to the garbage, despite the fact an Israeli Arab invented it.
-         Gamida Cell’s Nicord and StemEx treatments for blood cancers, leukemia and lymphoma are “No No”s.
-         So is Biocancell Therapeutics’s new treatment for bladder cancer.
-         Melanoma (skin cancer) sufferers can forget the successful T-cell treatment at Sheba Medical Center.
-         You must not treat patients with aggressive cancers if it requires the multi-antibody combination discovered by Israel’s Weizmann Institute.
-         Ban any work on the Hebrew University’s discovery of a mutated protein breast cancer signal. Then when you developed breast cancer your surgeons would just have to cut away healthy flesh with the tumor, as they would not be allowed to use the MarginProbe breast cancer test from Israel’s Dune Medical.
-         Children will contract kidney cancer because you prohibited Sheba Medical Center’s treatment of the cancer stem cells that fuel the growth of Wilms’ tumors.
-         Finally your worst nightmare is to be injected with Weizmann Institute’s microscopic device that searches the body for genetic malfunctions in the cells.

BDS members have no heart, no brain and no spine, otherwise why would they want to boycott Israeli cardiology, neurology and spinal treatments?

Heartless BDS members would need to avoid
-         Lev-El Diagnostics’ heart monitor algorithm that identifies heart disease in one hour instead of two days.
-         Enopace Biomedical’s endovascular micro-stimulator, which acts as a pacemaker for the arteries.
-         Or Dr. Shai Efrati, of Tel Aviv University, whose Oxygen enrichment therapy improves stroke patients even 3 years after their last attack.
-         And they would never use one of InspireMD’s new self-expanding stroke-preventing stents.

Brainless BDS activists can ignore Israel’s latest neurological discoveries and innovations such as:
-         How regulating the protein Calphotin can prevent Alzheimer’s disease
-         Why the sugar substitute mannitol protects the brain against Parkinson’s
-         Deep Brain Stimulation which treats Parkinson’s disease and helps smokers to quit
-         The pre-natal diagnostic tool for prevention of genetic mental retardation
-         BioControl Medical’s system that reduces epileptic episodes by half.
-         Alcobra’s ADHD medication, which is safer than Ritalin and has few side effects.
-         And certainly Weizmann’s research into how the brain repairs itself.

Spineless BDS bigots will have to forgo
-         Argo Medical’s ReWalk exoskeleton for paraplegics, for which Version 2 was shown to US President Obama; IDF paraplegic Radi Kaiuf used it to complete the Tel Aviv 10km race in less than 4 hours.
-         Mazor Robotics’s robotic spinal surgery which has just been approved for sale in Australia
-         Premia Spine’s artificial titanium joint that restores mobility to sufferers of spinal degeneration
-         Bonus Biogroup, which is generating new bones from a patients’ own fat cells.
-         Cartilage regeneration from a CartiHeal Agili-C implant
-         Diagnosis of walking problems using SensoGo’s gait analysis device

Finally, I can understand that you BDS people have no feelings for humanity.  But surely you must care for animals?  So please don’t boycott the first vaccine effective against canine monocytic ehrlichiosis (CME), a sometimes fatal tick-borne disease in dogs.  I realise that two Hebrew University veterinary scientists developed it, but you can’t let a poor animal suffer, can you?

Next week, I will post a feature on some of the Palestinian Arabs, Syrians, Iraqis etc. who have benefited from not boycotting Israel.
