2015 – So what’s new?

As we turn the pages of our calendars to begin a new secular year, what are the latest groundbreaking, life-changing discoveries, treatments and innovations to emerge from the Jewish State?

Israeli medical researchers continually uncover vital new information about our complex biological makeup.  Technion Professor Itai Yanai has been studying the on-off status of each of the 20,000 genes in a cell for nearly 3 years and his discovery of embryonic development sequences could help understand how cancer develops.  Meanwhile, scientists at Israel’s Weizmann Institute have demonstrated that brains of mammals (including humans) contain a 3D compass.  It explains conditions such as vertigo and disorientation.

Moving into the medical treatment development pipeline, positive results of trials of ND0612H from Israel’s NeuroDerm, may mean that severe Parkinson’s disease patients could avoid surgery - the only current alternative.  Almost simultaneously, Israeli biotech BioLineRX has announced successful Phase I/II trials of its BL-7010 co-polymer for the treatment of celiac disease, for which there is currently no cure or formal treatment.

Other recent Israeli developments include a new MRI technique from Israel’s Ben Gurion University that can detect damage to the brain much earlier than previously, when it is still treatable.  Also, Israeli biotech Efranat Ltd. is developing a novel immunotherapy treatment for cancer.   Meanwhile at Tel Aviv University, scientists have developed a new technique for detecting hazardous particles in the lungs.  The test can be used in emergencies such as fire rescues or as a warning of high pollution levels.  Finally, on Dec 3rd (International Disabilities Day) Beit Issie Shapiro launched its Technology Consulting Center, to share its expertise in the field of disabilities and technology.



Israel continues to be a world leader in the development of medical devices.  Israel’s Novocure has announced that its NovoTTF-100A portable scalp device extends the life of brain tumor patients.  The day when the blind can see comes even closer thanks to scientists at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Tel Aviv University. They have developed a wireless, light-sensitive, flexible implantable film that mimics the function of the photosensitive cells in the retina and could potentially form part of a device to replace a damaged retina.  The Israeli 3D printing company Stratasys is accelerating its expertise in building medical devices using 3D printed injection molding.  With 3D printing, device prototypes can be produced in 95% less time and at 70% less cost compared with traditional aluminum molds.



So many of Israel’s latest hi-tech innovations could make a huge positive impact on society. In fact, Israel even has an organization called “Tech for Good,” that promotes technology development to solve social problems. So it was unsurprising that the Israeli winners of the inaugural Untold News Awards in New York included Professor Dan Peer, who developed the "Cancer Bullet" (an inject-able form of chemotherapy) and Professor Idan Tobis, who invented a metal ligament prosthesis that reduces recovery time dramatically.  Then when Ben-Gurion University held a 28-hour “wearable technology” development marathon, the three winners were a student feedback system, a wearable locator device and a real-time translator.

Israel’s LifeBEAM has announced two more wearable innovations.  The first is its new “smart” baseball cap that measures vitals such as heart-rate, calorie usage and walking posture.  It complements Lifebeam’s cycling helmet, which has been available since 2013.  LifeBEAM’s technology is also providing the technology to power Samsung’s answer to the Apple Watch.  LifeBEAM’s sensor algorithms are embedded in Samsung’s Simband, measuring pulse, temperature, blood flow, skin conductivity and more.



Here are three recent Israeli innovations that can assist those involved in saving lives on a massive scale.  Firstly, Israeli startup Kalisaya, which has developed the KaliPAK – a portable renewable power solution.  It generates solar energy that can be used as an emergency backup generator in case of natural disasters.  Staying with the disaster theme, Tomer Simon, a Ph.D. student at Ben Gurion University’s Department of Emergency Medicine, has developed TwitterMate - a tool for filtering Twitter for only those tweets connected with a particular incident or subject.  And the development of the pocket printer by Israel’s ZUtA Labs moves forward with its latest prototype – enabling computer printing in challenging conditions.



Finally, to those readers who traditionally at this time of year make a resolution to lose weight.  Israeli technology has arrived to help you succeed.  Israel’s BitBite literally will whisper a word in your ear about your diet and provide you with real-time data to help you change your eating habits.  BitBite is an app and an earpiece containing a microphone, Bluetooth chip and other sensors that track what you eat, how much and how quickly you eat.

Israel through the Ages


This week I am focusing on how Israeli technology, innovations and humanitarian work touches the lives of young and old and everyone in between.

A new report published by Israel’s Central Bureau of Statistics states that the average life expectancy in Israel, has increased by 2.6 years over the last decade.  Israeli males can now expect to live to the age of 80 and females to 82.6 - both being two years longer than the OECD average.  Almost every day there is news of another Israeli treatment that promises to extend life even further.
 
Cancer is now the biggest threat to longevity.  The IceSense3 tumor-freezing technology from Israel’s IceCure is already destroying breast cancer and clinical trials will test if this can be extended to lung cancer tumors  New treatments for blood clots and strokes will also save millions of lives, so we eagerly await the outcome of new Phase II tests of THR-18 from Israel’s D-Pharm.  In a groundbreaking development, scientists at Israel’s Weizmann Institute have effectively reversed time by being the first in the world to transform adult cells into the earliest form of stem cells.  Stem cells have been re-engineered previously but those were limited to be specific to certain parts of the body.  The new Israeli stem cells have been completely “reset” and have the potential to be grown into any organ whatsoever.
 
The “age of innovation” makes it possible to manage patients’ health more effectively by using technology such as digitized health records and distance medicine.  These were among many solutions discussed at the Mobile Health Israel Conference in Tel Aviv.  One innovation in this space is the Tyto, a personal diagnosis device that can gather information straight from a patient’s mouth and throat, eyes, ears, heart, lungs, and skin. It includes a camera and microphone to take measurements, uploading the results to a doctor or health management organization.
 
 
Wounded Syrians of all ages have been brought to Israeli hospitals for treatment.  Ziv Medical Center in Safed treated a 9-year-old boy injured in his eyes as the result of an explosion.  Also two Syrians were brought to Western Galilee Hospital in Nahariya in moderate and critical condition, with head, chest and limb injuries.  Also in the Galilee, Israelis are fostering coexistence between young Arab and Jewish citizens. Nazareth is to be the site of a new campus of Texas A&M University to be known as the "Peace University".  Meanwhile, Israel’s Technion is a key member of the iPodia Alliance, which is implementing a new age of learning.   This new video describes the aims of “Classrooms without borders” – i.e. learning together for a better world.
 
 
Israel is full of young talent.  One of the latest innovations from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem has just been commercialized.  It is a clay-based mineral developed by Dr Yael Mishael.  The mineral is modified with polymers to absorb organic polluting chemicals and is even better than active carbon.  Multinational companies have been quick to recognize Israeli business opportunities.  Facebook’s Vice President Nicola Mendelsohn told Israel’s President Peres, “It was a momentous decision for Facebook to open its first Research & Development center outside the US.  We chose Israel in the knowledge that the best talent is found here.”  AOL is also hiring employees for its Israeli development center. And IKEA is assembling its 3rd Israeli site, near Haifa.  No wonder Israel’s unemployment rate fell again to 6.1% in the third quarter, from 6.8% in the second quarter.  Participation in the workforce went up, as did the percentage of full-time employees.
 
Even the international celebrities visiting Israel recently crossed the age spectrum, comprising Rihanna, Paula Abdul and the ageless Tom Jones who treated the baby-boomers in the audience to a rendition of  “My Yiddishe Momme” during his two concerts at the Nokia Arena in Tel Aviv.
 
 
Rounding off our journey through the ages, thousands of Ethiopian Jews gathered in Israel’s capital, Jerusalem, last week to celebrate the festival of Sigd that links their historical connection to the Jewish State.  The Biblical holiday was originally observed in Ethiopia 50 days after Yom Kippur to repent for sins, pray for their return to Jerusalem, the coming of the Messiah and a Third Temple.  On a lighter note, an Israeli entrepreneur has conceived an original and entertaining use of our heritage to attract young and old. Grant Crankshaw is using Crowdfunding to raise funds to build a Bible-themed mini-golf park in Raanana.  You apply for discounted tickets and your contribution is only collected if the campaign reaches its investment target.
 
Finally, in a young, modern State it is recommended to listen to those wise old heads that have had an excellent track record.  Aged 78, Dr. Eli Fischer doesn’t plan to retire any time soon. He is a scientist, successful industrialist, philanthropist and head of the international “Dr Fischer” brand. Having just published his autobiography, he now wants to do more in the area of anti-aging. His most important tip - “Do not stand still. You will learn all the time and even if things look pretty good, still strive to improve.”

2013 is the time for some Clear Thinking

As the world begins another calendar year, I urge all readers to try to open the minds of the international community to the momentous work that Israel is doing.  Israelis certainly have been using their brains and also focusing on making a clean start to 2013.

Beginning with the brain itself, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, together with the Max Planck Society of Germany, is to build a 3 million euro Brain Research Center in the nation’s capital, Jerusalem.  When complete, it should initiate new treatments for destructive neurological diseases.  Even before the new center is complete, Hebrew Uni researchers have discovered a key protein, Calphotin, whose absence can cause Alzheimer’s. Calphotin regulates the amount of Calcium contained in the body’s cells.  Loss of Calphotin (e.g. due to aging) causes Calcium levels to rise and accelerates cell death.  Finally, a study by Israeli neurologist Dr. Rivka Inzelberg has identified an interesting side effect of dopamine-stimulating medication to control symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. Patients have contracted artistic or literary creative skills that they never had previously.  Reducing the medication suppresses these new skills.

Israel certainly does not discourage individuals with brain disorders from coming to the Jewish State.  20 young North American Jews with Asperger’s Syndrome have just experienced Israel together on a special Taglit-Birthright tour.  They also met Israelis with Asperger’s at Shekel, an umbrella organization for Israelis with special needs. 


The Hebrew University of Jerusalem wants all Israeli citizens to have the opportunity to expand their minds with a higher education. It is therefore creating an access program for students from minority backgrounds and has appointed Professor Nayef Jarrous as its Minority Affairs Advisor.

At Intel’s Haifa centre, Israeli brains are clearing the route for future technology by pioneering a unique “perceptual computing” platform.  Now they are offering a $1 million prize to for developers to build applications that will allow computers to anticipate the needs of their owners.  Meanwhile, road users are already benefiting from Israeli clear thinking.  Ben Gurion University researchers have analyzed data from Israeli GPS navigation application “Waze “to highlight traffic trouble spots where police can be deployed more effectively.  New technology is one of the reasons why numbers of accidents and fatalities on Israeli roads have reached a 50-year low. 

It’s clearly time to move on to the subject of Israel’s work in cleaning up the environment.  Internationally, Israeli start-up Mapal Energy has completed a project in Brazil for purifying water in São Paulo.  Mapal’s units replaced the existing mechanical aerators, saving 50% of the energy while maintaining the quality of the treated water.  Meanwhile, the Israel-US fund for Research and Development (BIRD) has just announced that it will be providing $9 million for ten new infrastructure projects that include water technologies and environmental recycling. 

Cleanliness begins at home, of course, so it was good to read that the Israeli Government has increased the budget for rehabilitating polluted rivers and streams.  Two of Israel’s municipalities are also chipping in.  Be’er sheva has chosen trees over houses by revoking plans to build 16,000 new housing units in the city's Ramot Gimel neighborhood in favor of planting a new forest.  The urban forest will span across 1,360 acres and serve as the city’s green lung.  In contrast, Netanya has combined nature with urban priorities by clearing out 2.5 million cubic meters of garbage from a disused landfill site.  The result will be a residential area for 2,062 families and 1,100 hotel rooms, whilst at the same time extending Netanya’s famous iris nature reserve, thus enhancing the beautiful seaside resort.


Returning to the topic of education, 2012 showed that increased government funding, longer staff hours and teachers for specific subjects have led to encouraging academic results for Israel’s next generation of clear thinkers.  Let’s also hope that the Jewish State continues to be blessed with educators like Penny Ur from Moshav Amnon in the Galilee.  Penny has just been awarded the Order of the British Empire in the Queen’s New Year’s Honors List for her work promoting English language-teaching methodologies.


Finally, Israeli clear thinker Yaakov Kirschen has provided 40 years of profound satire and witty commentary on everyday Israeli news and international events with his “Dry Bones” cartoon.  He has traveled to the USA and the Far East, lecturing to the wider community and promoting the Jewish State.  He is now working on a new project to educate the next generation.
