Blown up in Gaza, he runs a marathon. IDF engineer Mendel Vile was critically wounded in Dec 2023 when Hamas terrorists in Gaza fired an anti-tank missile at his unit. After numerous surgeries it was a miracle he could walk.  Mendel completed the Washington DC Marine Corps Marathon with the Israeli flag on his back.

Academy Award-winning filmmaker Richard Trank has made a life-changing move leaving Los Angeles to begin a new chapter in Israel, where he is now focusing his lens on the aftermath of the October 7 attacks. Scientists at Israel’s Technion Institute used low-frequency sounds in Pink Floyd’s “Another Brick in the Wall” to make cells ‘vibrate’ and parts of the brain to ‘light up’. (TY Hazel) Mayors and municipal leaders from 15 countries gathered in Jerusalem for the 34th International Mayors Conference, organized by the American Jewish Congress (AJC) and the Israeli Foreign Ministry. King of Cambodia greets new Israeli ambassador. (TY Hazel) King Norodom Sihamoni granted a royal audience to Alona Fisher-Kamm, the newly appointed Ambassador of Israel to Cambodia, marking the beginning of her diplomatic mission. On track for renewables. (TY Atid-EDI) Israel is on track to meet its goal of, by 2030, producing a third of its electricity through renewable sources. By 2024’s end, 14.7% of Israel’s electricity used renewable sources.  The government has begun preparing to increase Israel's targets for 2035 to between 35% and 45%.

12% rise in Technion student intake. Israel’s Technion Institute enrolled 2,314 new undergraduate students in Oct – 12% more than in 2024; 45% of them women. Combating harmful fungi. (TY Hazel) Scientists from Israel’s MIGAL Galilee Research Institute, Tel-Hai College and the Technion found that plant-derived ferulic acid disrupts fungal sterol production, boosts antifungal medicines and reduces crop damage. Annually, some 2.5 million people die from fungal infections.

Tax saving for online Israeli buyers. Israel is to double the threshold for the tax exemption on personal import items shipped from abroad via online retailers. Currently, orders valued up to $75 are exempt from import taxes and 18% value added tax (VAT). This will shortly be doubled to $150.

McAfee buys Israeli privacy app. Israel’s MineOS is selling its consumer privacy app to security giant McAfee for an estimated tens of millions of dollars. Babka pies for Thanksgiving. Israeli-owned Breads Bakery has six sites and a kiosk in Manhattan and Brooklyn. Its founder, Gadi Peleg, has introduced two new babka pies for Thanksgiving: blueberry and cherry cheesecake. Pumpkin pie and apple pie are also available.

Israeli dances a full circle. Israeli dancer Yuval Cohen’s performance in a featured role of “Carmen” with the Philadelphia Ballet on Oct. 9 was a full-circle moment. He performed the same ballet in his first featured role with the company two years ago. He keeps in contact with his brothers in the IDF and raises money for Israel.

Wheelchair dance gold medalists. Israelis Tomer Margalit and Orel Chalaf (see here previously) won the gold cup at the 2025 Para Dance Sport World Championships in Kosice, Slovakia. Their victory culminated with Israel’s national anthem, “Hatikvah,” playing during the medal ceremony.

Israeli female motorcyclist wins World Cup (TY UWI) Israeli extreme motorsport enthusiast Alona Ben Natan finished first in the 2025 FIM Bajas World Cup’s female category after finishing 2nd in Dubai. She is the first Israeli woman to race in Dubai, Jordan and Morocco and aims for the 2027 Dakar Rally in Saudi Arabia.

Ninja Champions. (TY Hazel) At the European Ninja Championships held in Poland, Israelis May Yahalom, Hila Gilboa & Darian Toren won Gold, silver & bronze medals respectively in the Elite women category (see facebook video). THE JEWISH STATE

 

Goodbye Miriam. Netanya’s long-serving Mayor, Miriam Feirberg-Ikar, passed away last week. Her 27-year continuous tenure saw Netanya grow into the seventh largest Israeli city and home to many tech startups and multinationals. The city’s “Iron Lady” had become the public face of Netanya through decades of service.

Full circle. 22 years ago, a terrorist opened fire on a vehicle driven by Rabbi Yigal Kirshnzaft. All the bullets missed the Rabbi, his wife and 8 children, including baby Menachem. IDF officer Eyal Zamir was nearby and neutralized the terrorist. 22 years later IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir danced at Menachem’s wedding.

Reuniting the “Lost” Tribe. Israel has agreed to bring the last 6,000 members of the so-called “lost tribe” of Menashe, from Northeastern India, to Israel within five years. Some 5,000 of the Bnei (sons of) Menashe currently live in Israel. An Israeli delegation will start processing their immigration applications by next week.

Transcribing Cairo Geniza fragments. (TY Ron M) Of 400,000 images of fragments from the Cairo Geniza Israel’s National Library, only 15% have been transcribed; many never been properly read or studied. A $11.5 million grant has enabled the MiDRASH project to use eScriptorium open-source for auto-transcription.

A good time to make Aliyah. Prices of property in Tel Aviv have dropped recently, as some misguided “bubble” residents have decided to leave for perceived safer countries.
